Dr Alex Boutellier PhD

Senior Lecturer, Digital Film Production

Dr Alex Boutellier is a senior lecturer in cinematography on the Digital Film Production BA at Ravensbourne University. His practice-based PhD research at the University of Exeter and London Film School examined the impact of disruptive digital and virtual technologies on the traditional role of the cinematographer. Prior to his doctoral studies he spent 20 years working as a cinematographer and director, shooting commercials, tv, and narrative drama.

Research

My interests lie in disruptive technologies and how they impact the creative industries, particularly in relation to traditional job roles and hierarchies. Also, how do we teach new skills at the cutting edge of technology? I am also interested in becoming more involved in practice-based research in relation to filmmaking within an HE environment (see Mark Jenkins’ feature films BAIT and ENYS MEN).
